For this project, BWM Architekten delved deeply into the conditions and history of the memorial site and developed a number of sensitive redesign measures aimed at preserving the austere, basic character of this transformed place. Suggestions: a guest book as a “portable exhibition”; an acoustic space for the memorial room; a Mauthausen Survivors Documentation Project; an overview exhibition in the existing visitor centre. The main objective of the latter was to create a compact exhibition to function as an authoritative introduction for all visitors before they move on to the tour of the site.
